Many NGOs work to improve education: COOPI Cooperazione Internazionale is one of them. In three schools of Kasungu district – in Chamkango, Kamdidi and Lifupa – the NGO installed solar panels systems and procured computers. Only 12% of Malawi’s 18 million population is connected to the main electricity grid, which dips to 2% in rural areas. Renewable energy has proven to be a key improving factor: it means light for the students who can study at night; power for the teachers’ houses; the possibility to use computers to learn. Moreover, schools use electricity to offer cell phone charging services at a small cost, generating an income for the school itself.
